Secluded Cabins & Nose Jobs

This weekend the kids and I went up to a cabin in Island Park, ID (about 1.5 hrs away from Rexburg) with Rob and his students while they were doing some research with the Forest Service. BYUI owns a "cabin", remotely located in the woods, affectionately called the Nature Center, where students and faculty can stay while they do "stuff" (learning, etc.).

Now, I call it a "cabin" only because it is made out of wood. It is about the size of a mansion. My guess is that it is more than 10,000 square feet. It has more than a dozen bedrooms, some of which are the size of the entire main floor of our house, several bathrooms, a big, huge, outdated gourmet kitchen and an entryway/living room that is probably more than 1500 square feet. There is also a creepy basement that I only ventured into for less than a minute.
This place has an interesting history, which is only part of the reason I didn't sleep well that night. This cabin, because of it's size and remote location, used to be owned by the mob. There are secret rooms in the basement where they used to hide and perform plastic surgery to change the identity of mobsters who were trying to escape from the law. I know it was only surgery, but I kept picturing creepy human medical experimentation taking place like in "The Island of Dr. Moreau".

The kids had a good time running around and I only wish they were old enough to play a good game of hide and seek, or as Parker calls it, Hide and Zeke. We all stayed in the same room, which had 5 beds, a closet that was bigger than most regular bedrooms (and had a window) and a bathroom that was the size of our master bedroom. Let's just say it didn't suck.
I would have taken more pictures as we were leaving the next day, but I was crabby (long story, or maybe not) and in a rush and I totally forgot. It was snowy and beautiful and I am just kicking myself for not getting a pic of the outside of the "cabin". Maybe next time. Hoo haa haa....

Wow! That does look fun. How great would that be for a big family reunion?

I love your stories as always. Sounds like a creepy place to stay though I would agree. I am sure the kiddos had a blast.
