Florida Part 2: Wildlife Adventures

During our trip to Florida, we made an effort to seek out some of the local wildlife. Florida is home to incredible creatures. We had a few once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to interact with several native species. Our experience with the baby sea turtles was one of the most spectacular!

I was on the beach on the morning of the Atlas V rocket launch from Cape Canaveral and decided to take a walk up the beach. It was about 7:30am and Rob was at home with the kiddos. On my way back, I saw a couple of ladies making a fuss on the beach. As I looked closer, I could see several loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings making their way toward the beach. I only saw about 6 or so and figured they were the last of the nest. I headed inland about 200 ft. and saw that there were several other sea turtles still making their way out of the nest. I quickly called Rob and he and the kids quickly make their way down the beach. We all got to see several dozen sea turtles emerge from the next and waddle their way to shore. As they entered the surf, you couldn't help but cheer them on. To see a hatching at this time of the morning was especially rare as most loggerhead sea turtles hatch in the wee hours of the morning when it is still dark. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially for us Westerners.
Several baby sea turtles just leaving the nest. Most are still covered in sand.

They were tiny little guys, measuring around 3 in. long.

I'm surprised you didn't bring home a turtle to go with the chickens!! Turtle soup is a delicacy.
